Abramovic Marina Abramovic is a performance artist who has made a significant impact in the art world with her daring and thought-provoking works. Her performances have challenged traditional notions of art, pushing boundaries and breaking conventions. Known for her endurance-based pieces, she has become an icon in the realm of performance art. Born on November 30th, 1946 in Belgrade, Yugoslavia (now Serbia), Abramovic's interest in art began at a young age. She was raised by parents who were both artists themselves – her mother was a prominent member of the avant-garde movement and her father was a World War II hero turned nationalistic painter. These early influences undoubtedly played a role in shaping Abramovic's artistic identity. After completing her studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Belgrade, Abramovic moved to Amsterdam where she continued to develop as an artist. It wasn't until she met German conceptual artist Ulay (real name Frank Uwe Laysiepen) that she truly found her creative soulmate. The two became inseparable both professionally and personally, collaborating on numerous projects over their thirteen-year relationship. In their early years together, they created mostly body-art based performances which often involved extreme acts such as cutting each other’s hair or skin with razor blades while standing naked facing each other without flinching or showing any sign of pain. This intense physical connection between them served as inspiration for many later works. One of their most famous collaborations was "Imponderabilia" (1977), where they stood completely nude facing one another at the entrance to an exhibition space. Visitors had to squeeze through them to enter, forcing participants to confront their own bodies and personal boundaries while also being confronted by the artists' gaze. Their relationship ended dramatically during their joint piece "The Lovers: The Great Wall Walk" (1988).
